Frosth April 2021 HOTM Review and Grading - Empires and Puzzles Hero of the Month

Frosth is the April 2021 Hero of the Month in Empires and Puzzles. At fast mana speed, he is a minion spawning hero, vastly superior to Noor, the June 2020 HotM, as a minion generator. Despite that, Frosth still is inferior to the Valhalla minon spawners - Bera and Freya.

Frosth HOTM Review:

Frosth is an acceptable minion spawning hero. He won't single-handedly win raids or defenses, but he can be fun to use due to his fast speed minion spawning. He also buffs other minions and his buffs can stack. For example, if an ally has a minion with 200HP and Frosth fires his special skill, that previously existing minion's HP goes up 30% to 260. Then, if the same minion still is alive the next time Frosth fires his special, the HP goes up another 30% to 338.  Typically, however, a minion would not be alive that long, but in theory it can happen once in a while.

On defense, Frosth can provide minions as a meat shield. Such minion spawners have proven to be effective on defense, as both Freya and Bera are good defense heroes. However, Frosth's minions are weaker and of lower HP than those heroes' minions, so he simply cannot be considered as desirable as them. Frosth also is vulnerable to minion killers like Uraeus and Skadi. Nevertheless, as a fast minion spawner, I find Frosth a fun and desirable hero to have.

In addition, Frosth is in the rogue class, which means he will avoid some attacks if you have emblems on him, an additional benefit for defense.

When initially introduced, Frosth's special ability was fully raised to 30%, before leveling up. However, Small Giant Games, who runs Empires & Puzzles, announced that is a glitch that would be fixed eventually.

Frosth Emblem / Skill Path:

Frosth's minions are his primary skill. Because of that increasing their HP or attack is a goal. I recommend prioritizing HP then attack in the rogue talent tree for Frosth's emblems.

Frosth Grading:

  • Attack: B
  • Overall Defense: B
    • Tank: B
    • Flank: B+
    • Wing: C
  • Titans: B-
  • Raid Tournaments:
    • Rush: B+
    • Buff Booster: B
    • Bloody Battle: B
Overall Frosth Rating: B
In the current game meta, Frosth is an average hero for a 5* legendary. He may be better rated as B- due to the relative weakness of his minions compared with those of Freya or Bera, but his secondary effects, like buffing minions prompted me to raise him up to a B. What do you think?

I think you meant 13% HP instead of 3%

No sure minions will ever win a game... Or they have to change Noor to fast speed hero and then their minions can become really strong but otherwise, snipers will always win :)

this guy sounds TERRIBLE. 200hp minion boosted to 260 is going to do nothing. increasing 20 damage to 26 damage on a minion attack is going to do nothing. the fact that he needs other minions for that bonus to occur, which means he either needs to fire twice, or you need other minion spawners in your group, and those other minions to survive (lol not for long) makes that bonus extremely situational. the actual strength of the minions is pretty small. i would throw tiles at him to generate my mana and not give it a second thought. complete non-threat. i wouldnt rank him any higher than C.

Perhaps we need more diversity ion ratings?
As the game has evolved, situational heroes with specific weaknesses or issues that make them exceptional in the right circumstance but weak in the wrong...should we rate heroes by such circumstance? IE - WITH OTHER MINION HEROES Frosth could easily be bumped up to an A-. But not everybody has even a single minion Legendary hero?
Against a pack of minion heroes minion killers are All As, but against a sniper team?

The basics, titan, offense, defense, and overall paint a very framed non worldly idea of a hero...but maybe its time we added some variances and another tag rating: Situational strength/weakness (If any as not all heroes can be said to have such issues?)

@Greengoo, thanks, fixed now.

@ThaPizza, I agree, the comparison to Noor is striking.

@TLK914, he's very situational. In use I found that it was quite difficult to time Frosth to fire along with other minion spawners like Noor or Delilah. So to large degree, his minion boost itself is situational.

But not only is it extremely situational, it's not even that good IN that situation. I wouldn't grade him above C+, but if others find that being "fast" speed is valuable enough, then MAYBE B-.

I suspect that Frosth will have a very good synergy with Telluria, such that the old GTV defense might reemerge as the GTF defense. Frosth will buff up Telly's minions while Telly slows down your mana. To make matters worse it's extremely hard to put up any kind of debuff on Frosth. He resists burn and cleanses whenever you kill one of his minions. This could create a situation where two of the front three in a standard raid formation are extremely difficult to kill.

There's also potential here with Bertilla. Frosth's minions bump up her mana, she fires, summoning a baby minion, and then Frosth buffs it up when he summons a new wave of minions. Add in a Freya on the other wing for the defense/minion buff and you once again might have a very difficult front line to break.
Kambala said…
And how could I forget Lady of the Lake? Buffing up her mana stealing minions would be rough.
Telly said…
@Kambala: All good points and especially strategies for using Frosth. I do not see Vela very often any longer on defense teams, but still see Telluria frequently. Do you run across many Vela's? Regarding Frosth's cleanse, it would help a lot if his cleanse extended to the whole team or at least to nearby enemies.
Kambala said…
@Telly Not as regularly as in her hay day, but she does pop up now and again. GTV generally speaking isn't very common, but I could see Frosth giving it new life.
Kambala said…
@Telly According to Titan Mafia, Vela makes up a bit less than 17% of all top 100 groups, so she's definitely still kicking around.

A fast minion spawner....much like what Ksvir (the bee guy) has done to the 3* tournament, I recon this guy will be tough in defence and attack. The meat shield special element is key - buffing other minions is a side element.
Telly said…
I think this guy will be controversial. Some will love him, and others will hate him because he doesn't compare very well against Bera/Freya.
Anonymous said…
Isn't he good against the Spider Fiends ? As he is a fast minion-spawner

As with many heroes, their desirability depends largely on the heroes you already possess. For those already boasting defenses with Bera and Freya, Frosth is probably not worthy of receiving 'scopes. For players without those two minion summoners, however, he may fill a void in their current lineup. It's all situationally dependent. Not every HoTM can be the next Finley/Frigg/Etc. Sometimes a new hero initially appears underwhelming, yet proves extremely valuable in play due to unforeseen synergies. The opposite can also apply when a hero's stats or skills seem to be "off the charts" but in reality their performance falls flat due to readily available counters in game play.

I can't agree with you more. It all depends on the synergy, who to pair with whom and above all whether the board is with you or not ☺
Even the strongest heroes have their counters...

I’ve been lucky to pull Frosth from a load of Springvale summons and can’t see any difference in the quality of his special skill whether it be at level 1 or level 8. Am I missing something?
Telly said…
How about the minion buff?
Anonymous said…
I’d be curious to see how he interacts with Bera and Freya. Does his attack up
Stack w/ Freya’s. Depending on the situation I could see the three of them together being a massive pain. Even with just Bera’s minions the boost could be a nice bonus. Might need to consider adding synergy ratings. Like how Liz and Uraeus boost each other.
Anonymous said…
@Telly - that’s the same too 30% boost to both hp and attack. Just was wondering if there was something else that is affected by the special skill level like Power or Mana generation?
Telly said…
Having not yet personally done any pulls for Frosth, yet, I made some inquiries. It tunes out your observation is correct, that there is no improvement of level 8 compared to level one ... for now. Some people are speculating it's a glitch and will be changed. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

Thank you for the confirmation Telly, it will be interesting to see how/if alter it in the future. I’ve had a go with him teamed up with Glenda and Krampus and it works really well but it really highlights how weak Glenda’s skill link minions really are, even after being boosted.

A minor math clarification as I drew Frosth and am not desperate to work on his stats for at least a couple of others ahead of him...BUT...

Does his minion buff apply to Elizabeth's Fiends (It probably does as other minion affects apply to fiends). So presuming it does and he buffs 30% attack. That is a bump on top or overwritten? IE defense down is always overwritten in this game. So if you have say Athena and Frigg on a team the most recent of the 2 that fires is the buff that sticks for subsequent turns. So Athena is 40% plus increase for hits, and Frigg is 20% plus green tile multiplier. You only get the most recent as if Athena fired 1st it simply overwrites it when Frigg fires, which can usually lower the defense down as Athena is neverunder 40 and frigg is rarely over 40. No prob....it is what it is and you remember to not put them both on a team or always fire Athena 2nd.

SO, the fiends are a 40% attack calculation. Lets assume the original hero attack is 600, that means the fiend is attacking at 240%. If the fiend gets overwritten to 30% by Frosth, the new attack at 30% is now 180%, but if it gets 40% of previous 240 added, its now a sorta threatening 340 since it happens every turn for as long as the fiend lives?

I havent gotten Lizzie finished yet (SHes interesting and fun looking, but not game changer looking so far) so not testing her so far. But since he is a minion booster, might be useful on a team with her...if it works

Does this bonus stack with the Christmas family bonus?
Telly said…
@TLK914: Elizabeth's fiends are not minions, so minion buffers like Frosth don't affect the damage from her fiends.
Telly said…
@Anonymous: I have not personally tested whether Frosth stacks with the Santa's Challenge family bonus. I have heard that it does though.

I think you are way generous here. This HOTM is useless against a titan. You'd do better taking in a good four star instead. His minions are ok, but not great, minion buff isn't all that great a special, he's almost like a weak healer. This feels like another C grade in line with Noor.

Minions spawners are not meat to be used against Titan. They burn up too much time.
Anonymous said…
JekylAndHyde tried full Santa family with Frosth and Freya added, and proved to be a fun offensive team which might change your mind about this hero.
Telly said…
Definitely a fun hero, and has some value. I use mine and like him a lot paired with another minion spawning hero. That's why I gave him a B rating, instead of lower.
homaclese said…
I think one very important aspect that is not mentioned is his elemental link - this allows him to significantly speed up other blues in a minion stack, and also to counteract the mana cut of Freya and Bera tanks on death.

I don't know that I will use mine in raiding but I see him being very useful in auto-farming/S4 - anything that reduces my hands on time in PVE is worth an investment
Anonymous said…
Should I ascend him ? I'm a F2P and my tc20 don't give me 5*. I like him a lot because he is very fun to use. I don't have other summoners.
Telly said…
@Homeclase: Agreed. I've found my Frosth fun to use for auto-farming also; particularly paired with another minion spawner, even Telluria.
Telly said…
@Anonymous: Of course it depends on who else you have, but, he is good, and fun to use, I'm ascending mine.
Anonymous said…
@Telly Thank you, i will ascend him. :-)
I just have some 4* of the S1. I hesitated because people said that he is just good with other minions spawners.
Anonymous said…
I don’t really see that point of minions being buffed when you spawn em the most far right one disappear every time. Wouldn’t it be some much better if you and three minions already no one new is spawned and those you already have if buffed?
Anonymous said…
I love Frosth, I pair him with Freya and the couple is awesome and very fun to play with. The synergy might even be better with Bera, but I dont have her. On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend to use Frosth with weak-minions spawners which will push out Frosth's stronger minions, notably the strongest minion on the right.
