Malicna March 2021 HOTM Review and Grading - Empires and Puzzles Hero of the Month

Malicna is the March 2021 Hero of the Month in Empires and Puzzles. Reminiscent of Rumpelstiltskin or Danzaburo, her special skill includes some chance. Her first alternative is very powerful, but the other two are decent, but not very powerful. This unreliability will make Malicna a risk whenever you use her, but since her special skill has other viable features, she will be usable with caution.Malicna Hero Card March 2021 HotM - Empires & Puzzles

Malicna Special Skill: Grimoire Skim

  • Deals 260% damage to the target and nearby enemies.
  • Randomly casts one of the following Alternatives:
    • Alternative 1
      • The target and nearby enemies get -54% defense for 3 turns.
      • The target and nearby enemies get -54% attack for 3 turns.
      • The target and nearby enemies get -24% mana generation for 3 turns.
    • Alternative 2
      • The target and nearby enemies get-16% defense for 3 turns.
    • Alternative 3
      • The target and nearby enemies get -16% attack for 3 turns.
  • Element Link gives all dark allies a small amount of mana at the end of each turn for 4 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.
  • Innate Resistance: Health Steal Ailments - This hero has an innate resistance against status ailments that Steal Health.
  • Innate Ability: Status Effect on Mana Reduction - This hero receives the following status effect on Mana Reduction: The caster gets +94% defense against Holy for 3 turns.

Malicna HOTM Review

Malicna can both be fun and frustrating to use. Her three alternative special skills make her risky for virtually any use, except for relying on her attack stat for tile damage on titans. Her damage at 260% on the target and nearby enemies is moderate, and can make her acceptable for use if you just want her for the damage she can inflict. However the status effect components of her special skills are a risk, ranging from quite powerful to mediocre. 

Alternative 1 provides a powerful suite of ailments on the target and nearby enemies, and virtually cripples them, with three strong ailments: -54% defense, -54% attack, and -24% mana generation for 3 turns. If you want to take a chance, Malicna could be a powerful defender or support attacker, but only one out of three times.  The other three times, she is decent, but not great.  Those times, you get one of Alternative 2 (-16% defense ailment) or Alternative 3 (-16% attack ailment) for three turns on the target and any nearby enemies.  

Against titans, Malicna has a good base attack stat, so you could use her as a tile damage hero. She also is sort of a defense down hero, but unreliable. 2 of 3 times, her special skill will give you some defense down - either a very good one with Alternative 1, or a modest one with Alternative 2. I recommend using her against yellow titans if you do not have another purple defense down dealer, such as Guardian Panther or Tiburtus. 

Malinca's Emblem / Skill Path:

Malicna can be both an attack and a support hero. On balance, I prefer her for the 260% attack she can inflict, since her support skills are unreliable. Because of that, using a "sword" or attack/defense path on the cleric talent tree would be recommended. However, if you intend to use her primarily for her support abilities, knowing that they are risky, then you should emblem her up on the "shield" path - favoring defense and then HP/Health on the talent tree.

Note: Malicna mmay wind up being a surprisingly good hero for some, but for general use, I view her as a solid B or B-. Would you rate her highter?

This is a strange skillset. Danzaburo was one of the 1st 4 stars I drew so I maxed him and used him as often as possible for over a year till I got the roster up enough to bench him pretty permanently. The thing with Danzaburo or Rumple. is neither is an A+ hero that rewrites the game meta, But it was obvious from 1st read that all 3 of their "chances" are useful and fairly evenly balanced. They all are GOOD (probably not great...but situationally each can be "the needed one!").

Malinca actually has 1 really decent one, even great if you look at its totalitarian reduction of enemy immediate future. But the other 2 mostly suck?

I wrestled for a better analytical term, but nope, the other 2 (by comparison anyway?) SUCK! At 33% chance, I really dont see the point. I dont ever use Danz anymore, if I had a Rumple, because hes a 5 star and has better stats Id still use him even if his special can be unpredictable and therefore less likely to be the most needed help...its good enough usually to qualify him as useful no matter which you get.

Malinca, Im not that sure you can say that? Now if they had say mad option 1 -54% attack and/or defense to 1 enemy, option 2 -25% mana speed to 3 enemies, and option 3 the full batch at once, then at least you could say its interesting and you are hopeful every chance.

But they didnt.

The key thing to note is that regardless of the secondary effect(s), it always does damage, unlike the other "random" type abilities. It should be core graded on the weakest, and then bumped up one or two levels due to the strength of the other possible effects. I feel like the damage is decent for the speed, even if it only applies a weak secondary effect. Isolated, I feel like that scores it a B, but compared to other 5* probably more like a C+ to B-. The best effect feels like A- to me, so meeting in the middle feels like B to B+ sounds fair. I'm inclined to say more like B+ solely because you ALWAYS do the damage and there's no version where your ability does nothing. If you're ranking solely on effect, you're missing the true strength of the character.

I think we basically agree that the base damage of 260% is decent. Maybe in more use she'll seem more like a B+ but she really did not feel up to a B+ in the current meta.

Do you know, when will be springvale? This event doesn't work up on your pages. Up to Jack O'Hare hesn't slow mana but fast.

I don't like this hero and I think, that she doesn't deserve B grade. 260% damage to three enemies is not that much for an avarage speed hero. For example, Frida does 290% and have imo better secondary skill. Drake Fong on contrary deals 270% damage to three, but is fast. Moreover, his secondary skill is more reliable. On the other hand, poor slow Khagan deals 360% damage to three. As for the her secondary skill, there are many defense down heroes. I won't pair her with them, because she can overwhrite decent -44% defence down with her 16%.

Ma la skill che leggo qui è per la seconda alternativa sbagliata è un -16% e calcolando che con una truppa mana oltre i 23 guadagna velocità inserita nelle nuove formazioni in posizione giusta e contro le nuove formazioni mi se parte di alternativa 1 secondo me è da valutare A- le altre comunque abbassa o difesa e attacco in base a ciò che esce sempre secondo me potrebbe essere una B+.

I got 5 Malicnas now... I finally got the materials and don t know if I should ascend her ...

I already have Seshat maxed and with emblems at level 6 and Sartana maxed with emblems at level 16, Rigard costume maxed with emblems at 20, Tiburtus , Cheshire Cat , Proteus and Ametrine all maxed ...

I have Domitia costume, Quintus costume, Freya , Grimble, Zulag , Aeron, Obakan costume and Malicna... Which one of all these u would ascend ?

That's a lot of Malicnas! As for the next to ascend, I'd say Freya is the only top-tier on of them, so I'd go with her. She makes a great tank or flank on defense and also is great for raids, Ninja Tower and map stages.

My remaining MALICNA is 3-37 and I've been testing her at least 150 times. My statistics is that effect #1 only happens 10% of the time. It should be 33%! As such this hero SUCKS. They should adapt the odds honestly.
