Return to Morlovia Empires and Puzzles Halloween Event

Return to Morlovia is the Halloween event in Empires and Puzzles. It is one of the four seasonal events found in the game. This guide covers the stages and summon heroes of the event.

Return to Morlovia Halloween Event is updated for the October 2020 event

The Halloween event has received an overhaul for the 2020 event. The major new features include:
  • The addition of a new easy mode.
  • 4 new event heroes, including 2 legendary, 1 epic and 1 rare hero:
    • Vanda - 5* Red
    • Francine - 5* Green
    • Frank - 4* Blue
    • Jack - 3*  Purple
Read below for all the details and for my full reviews of Francine and Vanda and grading of each of the new heroes.

When is the 2020 Return to Morlovia Event?

The event runs for two weeks:

October 26 to November 9.

Return To Morlovia Stages

The Morlovia stage guide chart below lists all of the stages of the Halloween event . There are three difficulty levels - Easy mode, Normal mode, and Advanced mode. Each difficulty level has 20 stages, running from easiest to toughest - making 60 stages for the whole event. You can only play each stage one time. Each level has the same color monster waves and the same bosses in the final wave - for each of the difficulty levels.

Come back and refer to this chart during the event to build your most efficient attack teams for each stage.

TIP: The last few levels of the Advanced mode can be difficult even for mid- to upper- level players. Select your attack team to be strong against those colors. For example, yellow or red for stages 17 and 19, blue for stage 18 and yellow for stage 20.

This is the stage guide for the event:

Thanks to @Cap for creating this stage guide.

Pumpkin Bombs

The boards feature Pumpkin Bombs. Those are little landmines that explode and damage your attacking team, when the 3-turn counter on the bomb runs down. When a pumpkin appears on the board, it starts with a count of 3 on the pumpkin.  That counter goes down with each play, so after one turn it is down to 2, and after a second turn it goes down to 1. Then on the third turn, boom it explodes.

The pumpkins can be good, however. If you destroy them before they explode and damage your team, you gain mana for your team members who are the same color as the pumpkin. The pumpkins come in 5 colors - red, green, blue, purple and yellow. So if you match tiles with the pumpkin (or with a diamond), that destroys the pumpkin and your heroes that are the same element as the bomb gain some mana. The lower the counter on the pumpkin gets, the more mana they gain.

Special Event Heroes

Return to Morlovia features 7 special heroes for the event. 4 new heroes were added for the 2020 event.

      • Deals extra damage against Ice.
Francine Review: Francine brings a new ailment cleanse mechanic to Empires & Puzzles making her powerful both on offense and defense. She cleanses status ailments from all allies at the end of each turn, for three turns. It is as if a cleansing special skill is activated three turns in a row. With her fast mana speed, it is likely that you can keep Francine activated every 3 or 4 turns, meaning enemy ailment dealers and damage over time dealers are neutralized. This makes Francine very attractive against common defense heroes such as Telluria, Vela, Kunchen, Drake Fong and Jean-Francois in raid and war attacks.  Her damage dealt by her special skill is a little low, and hits only three, making her slightly less attractive for defense than for offense.  In addition, her high attack stat makes Francine attractive for use against titans.

Francine Grading / Ranking:
  • Titans: A
  • Overall Defense: A
    • Tank: A
    • Flank: A
    • Wing: A
  • Attack: A+
  • Raid Tournaments:

    • Special Skill: Twilight of Sorrow
      • Deals 125% damage to all enemies.
      • The caster steals 61% of any healing applied for 2 turns.
      • All allies are immune to status ailments for 2 turns.
Vanda Review: Vanda provides a powerful immunity to status ailments, along with a healing skill and a light attack on all enemies. The most powerful aspect of Vanda is the immunity to status ailments that she provides to all allies. If it were spread over 3 turns, I would say Vanda would be an A or A+ rated hero, but at 2 turns she feels like a version of Grazul, which makes her still good, but not quite deserving of an A+ rating.  Vanda's very fast mana speed also helps to make her special skill viable, and can be timed to block incoming status ailments if used well. This makes Vanda a good attack hero, especially against the typical status ailment and DoT defense heroes like Vela and Gravemaker. On defense however, her special skill is somewhat situational, and lacks the heal that Grazul has, making her less desirable. In addition, Vanda's high attack stat makes her a good selection for a red mono team attacking blue titans.

Vanda Grading / Ranking:
  • Titans: B+
  • Overall Defense: B-
    • Tank: C
    • Flank: B-
    • Wing: B-
  • Attack: A-
  • Raid Tournaments:

I want those new heroes, especially Frank and Vanda. Hopefully they won't nerf them too much or at all in the beta.

Thanks for this wonderful website.
Any rumors for new heroes for christmas? I have always though a Grinch would be good. Perhaps as a Purple Hero. Destroy all minions, steal buffs, etc. (Vacuuming present) lol. 3 or 4 star snowman, etc.

What great ideas! Unfortunately I haven't heard anything about that. But, I wouldn't be surprised if they do have some new heroes for the Christmas event, since they haven't for a long time.

Hey Telly, great blog!!! I wanted to know what do you see in frankie thats similar in Almur. Thanks!
Telly said…
@Nicolas: I was referring to the -44% defense ailment from Frank's special skill. It's not identical to Almur of course, who is average mana and elemental green defense down only. He'll be useful against red titans, and a step up for people using Costume Gunnar or Costume Kiril now for the defense down.

Victor is actually one of my three strongest heroes at this moment (w/Vela and Kingston). His Damage over time with an attack profile on talents makes him devastating, and with a mana troop behind him, he fires off insanely fast. He has to be one of the most underrated heroes out there! Worth a reexamine. His health stealing makes him an excellent Telluride killer, too. Can you reexamine him?

*Telluria. Stupid autocorrect!!

Yes, I will take another look at Victor once the event goes live. He got a buff in Beta, and I'd like to see how the final buff looks once it goes live. @ffeinandsugar: what DoT are you seeing from him with the talents/mana troop?

DoT for Victor is really fast (6 shields only) with a Mana troop; its easy for me to hit a clear channel of 3 purple shields and immediately reload, which quickly snowballs to 171 per turn for 5 turns outright (resets turn count with each additional hit.) Its a nice workaround on the Black Knight Flesh Wound routine, among other tanks. Initial strike is only 211% of offense, but I'm taking the sword/shield talent path, so he's already well north of 800. Add in the defense boost and he's also pa beast on Buffalo boost and Blood tourneys (not so much on rush, where everyone else is just as fast).
