Ninja Tower Guide - Empires and Puzzles Event

Green ninja from Ninja Tower Event
The Ninja Tower event is a hybrid challenge event and quest in Empires & Puzzles, introduced in October 2020. The event is played every other month, with the fifth event in May 2021.

This guide provides all the details about the Ninja Tower event, and the best strategies and tips for getting high scores. The Ninja tower introduces Ninja heroes, with a new type of attack - a charge attack. It also introduces new 4* troops - Ninja troops, which are like mana troops, but with defensive buff bypass instead of a mana boost.

Video: Playing Floor 50 - Top Floor

I made a video of playing the top two floors of the Ninja Tower. I only lost 3 heroes in the entire event to the curses, following the survival strategy that is discussed in the article below. There was one point where I fat fingered an error - can you find it?
UPDATE: I have updated the grading of all the 5* Ninja heroes. See the grading below in this article.
The basic event structure is a combination of the Tavern of Legends and a challenge event, such as Knights of Avalon, or Riddles of Wonderland. The event has competition levels like the Tavern of Legends, and it is possible that you can lose heroes for the entire event if they get an ailment 2 times. More on those ailments below. Like the challenge events, there is a leaderboard, and prize awards based on points received at each level.

Ninja Hero Reviews

The reviews and grades of all the Ninja heroes further down in this article. Here are quicklinks for the 5* ninjas. The 4* Ninjas are under them:

Climb the Levels of the Ninja Tower - Ascending Levels of Competition

First off, players compete in who gets to the highest floor of the deadly Ninja Tower. The tower has 50 levels, called floors, and you climb up the tower by completing each level. This is like challenge events, where you climb up event tiers by defeating the monsters at each level.  Once you defeat the monsters at each level, you go up to the next level, until you get to Level 100 in the Ninja Tower event.

Ninja Tower Levels

You can only fight a particular floor once.

Unlike challenge events, but like Tavern of Legends, once you complete a level in the Ninja Tower, that level is marked "Completed" and you cannot go back and try it again. So, make your best score the first time!

Ninja Tower Quest Scoring Strategy

The scoring in the Ninja Tower event is like that in the Challenge Events like Riddles of Wonderland or Pirates. You get extra points for completing the level faster, and you also get match points.  As in challenge events, after you complete a level you get a score screen that shows your scores based on 5 criteria:
  • Enemies Defeated
  • Match Bonus
  • Time Bonus
  • Health Bonus
  • Continue Penalty
So the best strategy for completing each level is:
  • Make Matches:  Make a lot of 5-matches and 4-matches.  The diamonds are your friend!
  • Speed Counts: Complete as quickly as possible. The timer is your enemy!  Top player will use powerful battle items like Bomb Attacks, Dragon Attacks and Tornadoes to gain higher scores.  However, crafting these items can be very expensive in terms of resources used, especially since this is a 50 level event.  My advice for most players is to use these battle items sparingly and when they will make the biggest impact.  For example, a good use of a bomb attack would be if using them can kill off the remaining enemies in one or two shots.

Tower Energy Flags

Tower Energy flags are the equivalent of event flags or world energy flags.  When you start a level in the Ninja Tower, you need to use one of your tower energy flags.

You start out with full flags - 10 flags.

The tower energy flags fully replenish every 21 hours.

Event Timer

The event timer is currently set to run for 5 days. So, 50 levels in 5 days at 10 levels per day.  You will need to check in on the event every day, or else your flags will not sufficiently replenish to complete the event. Of course, you may be able to purchase more flags in the shop.

Ninja Tower Gameplay

To play the event:
  1. Click on "Event Quests" from your map.
  2. Click on the "Ninja Tower" icon.  It will show the time left above the icon, just like for other events.
  3. Go to your current floor, for example 15.
  4. Click on "Enter".  Doing so will use up one Ninja Tower Energy flag.
  5. Create your event team for that floor, selecting the heroes you want to bring, troops, and up to four battle items.
  6. Play the floor, and defeat all the monsters.

Ninja Tower Level Guide

This is a level guide (stage guide) for the current iteration of the Ninja Tower event. I expect it will be changing a lot, so check back for each event for updates of it. This is a very big graphic, so you will need to click on it to get the text readable on many devices. TIP: at the start of each tower level, you will see the waves and bosses, so you can probably do the event without a level guide. However, this guide is particularly useful in planning out your hero roster strategy.
Thanks to @Cap for putting together this graphic.

Explode the "Oni Stone" In Three Turns Before it Gives You an "Oni Curse"

The Ninja Tower quest features a new type of shield (in other words a board gem), called an Oni Stone. They are not good! When one appears, you have three turns only to match it in order to destroy it. If you miss, then you get an Oni Curse on one of your heroes.

3 Turn Oni Gem Counter

When an Oni Gem appears, it displays a 3 turn counter both on itself.  It also displays a curse count on the random hero that may get the curse if you don't explode the Oni Gem in time.  You have to match the Oni Gem before the timer runs down to 0.

Get 2 Curses and You're Out!

Once a hero gets 2 curses, it is eliminated from the Ninja Tower event. That is sort of like the Tavern of Legends, where you can only use a particular hero once. Unlike ToL, you can use heroes over and over, until they get 2 curses on them. In theory this helps players with deep benches. At lower floors in the Ninja Tower, you may only get one Oni Gem, if any. However, they get much more common at higher floors, and also on the last wave of each level, so watch out.

The in-game tooltip says:

"This battle features Oni Gems. Destroy Oni Gems quickly to avoid their powerful curse. A hero that is cursed 2 times cannot be used again in this event!"

Once a Hero Gets A Curse, It Gets A Curse Counter

Once a hero gets a curse, it appears in the curse counter.  So if the hero has 1 curse, a number "1" appears on the hero, indicating that its curse counter is at 1.  Once the curse counter gets up to 2, that hero is eliminated.

During game play, the curse counter appears on the hero that could get the curse if the Oni Gem is not exploded. Once the Oni Gem is exploded, it says "curse broken" and the counter goes back down.  For example, if the hero has 1 curse already, if the Oni Gem gives it another curse, its counter goes up to 2.  However, if you manage to destroy the Oni Gem in time, the curse is broken, and the counter goes back down to 1.  If the hero did not have any permanent curses yet, the counter goes down to zero.

How to Destroy Oni Gems

Oni gems can be destroyed like any other tile:
  • Match with adjacent shields (tiles) like usual matching.  They can be moved to make matches like any shield/tile.
  • Using an adjacent match-4 Dragon
  • Explode a match-5 diamond of the same color
  • Complete the stage before the Oni Gem countdown ends

Strategies for Oni Gems in Ninja Tower

  • Once an Oni Gem appears, think about how you can explode it quickly.
  • Use less important heroes at lower floors, to avoid curses and save them for the upper floors.
  • If one of your heroes has a curse already, think about whether you will need it for higher floors before taking it to battle on a lower floor.
  • Survival Strategy: Use healers and minion spawning heroes to stay alive. This may help you climb all the way to the top of the tower.
  • High Score Strategy:
    • Play fast.
    • Use battle items to kill the ninjas quicker.
In summary,
  • Oni Gems are new to the Ninja Tower event
  • Oni Gems are bad!
  • Once one appears, destroy it quickly, and before the 3-turn countdown timer runs out.
  • One random hero of yours may get the curse.
  • Once the timer runs down, the Oni Curse becomes permanent on that hero.
  • Get 2 Oni Curses, and that hero is benched for the remainder of the Ninja Tower event.

Ninja Tower Blessings

The Ninja Tower also gives so-called "Blessings" to heroes.  These are buffs that become available every 3 levels of gameplay in the Tower.  So, new blessings become available after floors 3, 6, 9, 12 and so on.

These blessings are buffs that are usable only during the event. Once you get a blessing, it remains active for the remainder of the event.

You are given a choice of 3 blessings to choose from. You must choose one of those blessings, and they apply to all your heroes for the remainder of the event. The blessings selected and applied cannot be dispelled.

The blessings also are stackable. Once selected they are added to each of your heroes. If a blessing you already have appears on a later floor, you can select it, and it gets added to your heroes. For example, if you picked +5% defense on Floor 5, and then that blessing is offered again on Floor 15, you can select it again, and your defense buff goes up to +10%.

Types of Ninja Tower Blessings:

  • +5% attack
  • +5% defense
  • +5% mana generation
  • +5% critical chance
  • Summon a minion with 5% health and 5% attack inherited from the owner every 5 turns
  • 50 HP added every 5 turns
  • +5% healing
  • 10% mana added every 5 turns
Recommendations: My recommendation is to prioritize attack in this event. So, in order of preference, I have been choosing blessings in this order: attack, critical chance, mana generation, defense. The minions are another option, however, they slow you down slightly. Slowing down can lower your score, since one of the scoring criteria is time to complete the level. Because of that I prefer not to select the minion option.

Ninja Tower Event Leaderboard

As with other challenge events, the Ninja Tower event has a leaderboard, where you can see the line-ups used by top players.  Also, your  ranking is displayed in the quest panel.  So when you click on the Ninja Tower quest, and go to the tower screen, you will see the floors, and a readout on the "Highest Floor" you have climbed to, your score, and your current ranking.  You will see your ranking even if you have not made it high enough to be on the leaderboard.

Your score for the event is the total of your scores at each floor in the Ninja Tower - similar to other challenge events.

The leaderboard is split in tiers, and the higher your tier, the better prizes you get, such as increased chances at 3* or 4* ascension items.

Ninja Hero Summons, Reviews, Grades

Like most of the monthly challenge events and quests in Empires & Puzzles, the Ninja Tower event has an event summons with special event heroes, in this case, Ninja heroes, with charge attacks. All the ninja heroes are listed below, with grades, ranking and reviews.

I did 20x pulls on the Ninja Summons in the latest event, and guess who showed up. Click to view the video.

I have updated summon simulator at All Heroes with a Ninja Hero summon simulator! The links to the summon simulator and to the hero compare and grading are at the beginning of this article. Scroll up ^.

The Ninja Charge Attack

All Ninja heroes have "charge", not mana speeds. What this means is the special skill increases at each of three levels of charge. As the hero cards state, Special Skill has different effect if charged with 100% / 200% / 300% mana.
  • Charge Level 1: First level special skill. Takes 5 tiles to charge - 100% mana.
  • Charge Level 2: Second level special skill. Takes 10 tiles to charge - 200% mana.
    • Takes 9 tiles to charge with a level 11 mana troop.
  • Charge Level 3: Third and best special skill. 15 tiles to charge - 300% mana.
    • Takes 14 tiles to charge with level 11 mana troop.
    • Takes 13 tiles to charge with level 29 mana troop.
The longer you wait to use the special skill, the better it gets. However, the third tier of the charge attack is slower than a very slow hero, so be careful, that may be too long to wait. Here's updated hero stats:

Jade Ninja Hero Review:

Jade ninja has tank base stats, making her a meat shield, with an interesting special skill. She is like a cross between Guinevere, with mana control, combined with Margaret's dodge skill. I find Jade's 1x mana charge level to provide a rather weak special, and that is why she is a good, not great tank.

However, the 3x mana charge is formidable, with a 75% chance of dodging special skills, and 25% mana reduction on all enemies. On defense, there is no assurance that Jade would even be alive by the time the 3x charge was ready and also no control over whether the AI would even wait until then to use the special skill. Against titans, Jade has a low attack stat, so if you have heroes with higher attack stats, use them. All in all, I have given Jade an overall grade of B.

Garnet Ninja Hero Review

Garnet Legendary Ninja Hero
Garnet is perhaps the most powerful healer in Empires & Puzzles. Using the charge feature you can keep your attack team fully charged, or more in most raids. Likewise, Garnet is very good on defense, combining the health boost, with a powerful multi-turn immunity to status ailments.  However, the AI will not optimize when to use the special, so for defense, Garnet is an A- or perhaps lower. I have graded Garnet as an A+ overall due to her high value for attacks.

Cobalt Ninja Hero Review

Cobalt deals huge damage when used strategically. Like all ninja heroes, Cobalt is somewhat situational. After all, the 1x charge only hits one target. However, the 290% hit on that one target is stronger than the paper numbers may imply. This is because Cobalt also comes with a very high base attack stat of 801. So that 290% hit is much stronger than the 300% hit of weak snipers like Malosi. The 2x and 3x charge attacks are formidable, making Cobalt an outstanding attack hero, and even viable on defense.

Even better, Cobalt's attack has a high chance of bypassing defensive buffs. On the 3x charge, Cobalt always bypasses defensive buffs. This makes Cobalt like an AoE version of Kageburado, who is one of the best snipers in Empires and Puzzles. If Cobalt lives and fires its 3x charge, usually it is game over.

As for titans, Cobalt's high base attack stat makes it a good addition to a titan attack team.

3x Mana Charge

Ninja Family Bonus

The Ninja heroes also get a family bonus for using 2 or 3 Ninja heroes on the same team. The bonus for 2/3 heroes is:
  • 5% / 10% chance to dodge normal attacks and Special Skills.
  • 5% / 10% chance to counterattack with 60% / 90% of the damage received.
This is the most powerful of all family bonuses in Empires & Puzzles. It creates a great incentive to use multiple Ninja heroes on either your defense or attack teams. For example, instead of going mono on an attack, you might consider throwing in an off-color ninja hero, to make it two, or three on the team.

Ninja Troops

Finally a new type of troop is introduced into the game with the Ninja Tower: Ninja troops. These are 4* Epic level troops, one in each color.  The Ninja troops are available only during the Ninja event, in Ninja Troop Portal during the event. That makes the Ninja event the best time to try to pull troops, and use troop tokens, since the Ninja troop portal as the usual 10% chance to pull other 4* troops and an additional 5% chance at getting ninja troops.
The Ninja Troops are like mana troops, except that they have a higher attack (plus 6%), higher defense (plus 1% at level 30) and a defense bypass chance instead of a mana boost. The healing buff is the same. When fully maxed, their stats are:
  • Attack: 32%
  • Defence: 17%
  • Healing: 20%
  • Chance for Bypass: 15%.
Their stat progression at each level are the same as for mana troops.

Are Ninja Troops worth pulling? If you have fully leveled Epic mana troops, you gain +6% attack for going through the food expense of leveling up a Ninja Troop.  If you feel the extra 6 percent is worth it, go for it! Most top level players would want the extra attack, as that is a key to high scores in challenge events. Also, if you are using low level mana troops on stacks or challenge events, it may be worthwhile to swap out a level 2 or level 5 mana troop with a Ninja troop at the same level, to get the extra attack boost.

How Ninja Heroes Work on Defense Team

The charge attack special skill creates some new and unique strategy to use. For example, should you wait until the second charge? Or Third charge? Or should you use the special skill on the first charge level? On defense, you rely on the game to play for you against an attacker, so its AI ("artificial intelligence" robot) determines when it wants to fire a special skill. For all other heroes, the AI will fire the special skill immediately when it can. However, for Charge Attack heroes, like Ninjas, the AI randomly determines whether it will hold on to the second or third charge, rather than using the first charge. As Small Giant announced:
When encountered as enemies (in both map stages and PvP modes), Ninja heroes will sometimes wait before using their special skills, allowing them to use their 2nd and 3rd charge levels.

What this means is:

  • Enemy Ninjas that are controlled by the AI randomly fire at 1x, 2x or 3x charges.
  • You don't know when the Ninja will fire, so plan accordingly in an attack!
What do you think about the Ninja event? The heroes? The Ninja troops?

Yes, it gets very difficult over about levels 10 or 15. I have found you can get into the 30s using just 3/70 heroes (4* or 5*). Bringing along a healer and a minion maker also helps survive a level. If you are going for a high score, bring along materials and fast snipers in addition to healer(s).

Been playing about 5 months, and the Ninja event is the most discouraging thing I've experienced in the game. I'm not even going to bother using up my Flags because it just isn't fun. In the Halloween event at least the exploding pumpkins gave a reward (mana) for clearing them. The Oni Gem's just suck.
Anonymous said…
Agree. Ninja tower feels like a pointless grind. Not much fun.
Telly said…
Yeah, it can be frustrating, but my best advice is to stick with it and use all your flags, even if you don't get very far up the tower. Each level will give you ninja coins and emblems, which aren't bad for level loot. You'll be glad you got them.

I am in total agreement. I used to think the Christmas event was the most difficult because the frozen tiles didnt hurt your heroes, they ate your personal human TIME! cascades are nearly impossible, it sucked and I hated the Xmas event.

Then they invented the NINJA PRISON.
Its a brutal assault on the senses. You STRESS playing it. The pumpkin bombs are similar stress, but at least you can come back from those and try again. In the ninja it KILL kills a hero if he gets cursed twice. You cant even surrender the level. If you quit with any curses on the board, they immediately apply to the hero...so you lose a coin AND the hero! Once you start, you have to finish, and you have to worry and work, and its just alot of stress while doing it.

The rewards are actually pretty decent. Emblems especially are becoming mroe and more valuable as they release mega heroes like gumballs from a machine. Only chemistry on a team and emblem volume makes the final difference. But its expensive. I go through more materials and items in 4 days than I do in 4 MONTHS. and losing a key hero is mentally taxing. You try and start small...and then lose all 5 because of curses changing tyour board play...so you say I CANT PLAY 4 STARS, GOTTA RAMP UP, and that was actually untrue. the need to avoid curses, coupled with the fact that several of the Ninja Hero bosses hit harder than Apache Helicopters frustrates very quickly.

Key: MANA BLOCK HEROES ARE GODS against the ninja bosses. Thats Hel and Proteus for those who havent seen them yet. They slow the board unconditionally, buy you time to avoid Cobalt and Onyx just slicing and dicing you. They have helped quite a but.

Until they got cursed. ARGH!

The Ninja heroes, especially Cobalt, Onyx, and Garnet are bordering on amazing. Even Mica and Jade arent at all slouches...
They all have AI issues, but 75% of the heroes in the game have those problems. If they dont know when to shoot or wait, their power is compromised. a few like say Justice who is just hard to kill, or Alfrike who you shoot and its usually over...even the AI cant screw that up. But the Ninjas are impressive no doubt.

I think the chance to get ninja troops through the epic troop summon has been adjusted. Or the 10% for all 4* troops you listed here is incorrect.
In the troop portal the chances are listed as: 85% chance for 3* troops, 10% chance for 4* troops and 5% chance for ninja troops.

Am I missing an Onyx review?

@Tommygun, I've done an update to clarify that. Thanks!

The game would be better if they deleted this crap.

tbh ninja tower or mythic titan is just same sh*t for me . they both require too many too precious items (I don't even know how top players can have so many tornadoes - or is there a substitute?) and rewards (given you're not the best) are just not worth it. with ninja tower the absolute bonus is that you cannot even enjoy playing it, because you only focus on destroying the Onis which appear almost on every turn on higher levels . it doesn't have anything to do with strategy and the boards are obviously not random (again) otherwise it couldn't happen that so many times Oni spawn on element you have only like 3 diamonds of on the board - sometimes several times in a row. if I'm unlucky I can lose 3 heroes on one level and it's not like I have tens of best legendaries to play with. I understand there are specific heroes that can help you get high, but if you don't have them because you don't spend thousands of buck per month on this lottery, you can only do so much.

*I'd be much happier accepting that they created an event for top players if only the rewards would be more satisfying for them. but they're not...

to summarize, nothing has changed at SG and everything new they create is just to grab more money for too few to enjoy it
