Zulag October 2020 HOTM Review and Grading - Empires and Puzzles Hero of the Month

Zulag is the October hero of the month (HOTM) in Empires and Puzzles. She is a defense specialist, like Raffaele, the June HOTM.  This is my review and grading of Zulag.

Zulag HOTM Review:

Zulag is the October 2020 Hero of the Month in Empires & Puzzles. Zulag is a good healer, but only for itself and nearby allies. At average speed, I expect that she will be in some demand, whereas Raffaele was not, due to his slow speed, even though he healed all. With her strong defense buffs, Zulag might give Rigard competition as the go-to healer in purple-Dark teams for some players. But again, Rigard heals all allies, making him a superior healer in many situations. For now, my plan is to continue using Rigard Costume, since the costume version comes with an attack buff and still heals all heroes. However, Zulag would be suitable for a two-tanky hero defense.

Unfortunately, Zulag's Dark Minions are terrible as designed. They are underpowered, at just 5% HP and 5% attack. This may hinder her acceptance even on purple stacks. In fact, with any team or defense having minion spawners, like Delilah, Seshat or Telluria, Zulag's minions will almost be like an ailment. Since each hero can carry only 3 minions, Zulag's Dark Minions will push out better minions due to the 3 minion limit. To see who Zulag would not pair very well with, see this comparison of the best minion heroes in the game at All Heroes, each of which spawn good minions that may be pushed away by Zulag's weak minions.

On titans, I do not like minion spawners in general, because they slow down the titan attack, without much benefit. Zulag has a relatively low attack statistic for 5* heroes. So if you have anything better, leave Zulag off your titan attack teams.

Zulag's Emblem / Skill Path

Zulag will compete with other great paladin heroes for emblems, such as Clarissa and Telluria.  If you have emblems to throw her way, I recommend the defense-health path, since Zulag is a defensively oriented hero.

Zulag Grading:

  • Attack: C
  • Overall Defense: B
    • Tank: B+
    • Flank: B
    • Wing: C
  • Titans: F
  • Raid Tournaments:
    • Rush: A
    • Buff Booster: A
    • Bloody Battle: C
Overall Zulag Rating: B-
What do you think of those weak Dark Minions? Should Zulag be downgraded even more?

With average manna speed he certainly sounds better than Raffaele. As for his weak minions, let's hope that this changes before he is released into the wilds since he is still only on beta testing

I haven't seen any update on the weak minions. It's not just Zulag. Other heroes expected to be released in the last part of 2020 feature those weak minions too. There has been a lot of criticism, and no update. That could mean they will be released in-game as they currently are proposed, or that a further round of beta testing is on the way.

I'm still relatively new to E&P but there's still hope that we'll see some of our input come to light in reimagined, and better heroes. The youtube reviews and other blog make much of the difficulty of using heroes such as Zocc, but I think, given a look at the boards of long time players, the newer heroes will find their places.

I hope you are right @Milo. Some stronger HOTMs are coming in November and December 2020, unless they get downgraded between now and then.

So I have a dark holy team. With Ursula vivica sartana sif and Clarissa. I however can see her taking a spot on that team. Trading the attack power of Clarissa for a defense boosting healer like her.

I can see trying out swapping Zulag for Clarissa as well. Curious how it works out for you @Sandmandsdream. If you wanted to go 4-1 you could try removing Viv and only protecting 3, or going strong healing rout and remove Sif.

Healers who heal 3 instead of 5 seem to always fade away. Most are 4 star, and they all get some run early after release and then tend to be forgotten. The trouble is almost always they have similar skills to their heal all counterparts and usually a slight boost in stats in exchange for healing 3 instead of 5. If they wanna make us continue to employ a 3 hero healer, they need to make it worthwhile. heal all 3 55% or heal and add in 45% defense for 3 turns. Something.

The weakling minions are a throw in anyway. She was already a non starter based on design

I have to wonder what to do with my 3 Zulags. Eventually I'll get one up to 3/70, but I'll be interested to see what people think of this HOTM after a couple of months. At present, I am leaning to downgrading the initial rating from a B- to C+, but intend to wait a while longer to get more feedback from people who've decided to fully level her.

I was comparing Zulag and Guinevere on the Allheroes site and their are not that different.
Telly said…
@Papalhorno Which do you prefer? I think the reason Guin is viewed as top tier (although not what she used to be), and Zulag is viewed as mediocre is that Guin does the 20% mana reduction, which can be quite powerful. The heal-3 that they both have is identical. Guin's elemental defense buff is useful with titans.

With the addition of the new raid formations, is a re-grading in order for these heroes that now can heal all allies?
Telly said…
Maybe. Before I do a project like that, I'll wait to see if they make formations permanent, or if they change the hit-3 hits 5 feature.
