Zocc - August 2020 HOTM in Empires and Puzzles - Hero of the Month Review and Grading

Zocc is designed as a Vela counter and an excellent mana control 5* Legendary HOTM for Empires & Puzzles. Zocc is the Hero of the Month for August 2020 coming right after Noor,  The in-game version of Zocc had no changes from the final beta version.

Zocc's Stats:

  • Mana Speed: Average
  • Level: Legendary 5*
  • Class: Rogue
  • Element: Nature - Green
  • Attack: 739
  • Defense: 725
  • Health - HP: 1351
  • Innate talent:  Resist Water Damage – This Hero has an innate resistance against Water damage.

Zocc Special Skill: Keyknife Typhoon

  • Deals 300% damage to the target.
  • Increases the mana of the target by 50%.
  • The target automatically casts Mindless Attack on a random ally when mana is full during 3 turns.
  • Element Link gives all Nature allies +30% defense against Special Skills for 4 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.

Zocc HOTM Review:

Zocc is the August 2020 Hero of the Month in Empires & Puzzles.  There are two things of note with Zocc.  First, he resists water damage, which means that the damage-over-time from Vela will have no effect on him.  His Green-Nature class makes him an excellent counter to Vela as his tiles are strong against Vela's Ice / Blue.  

Zocc Has a Powerful Mana Control Special and resists water damage

Zocc's special also is a lot of fun to use on Offense in raids and against powerful map stages and high levels of Challenge Events.  It's devilishly clever.  Zocc first raises (yes raises) the mana of the enemy by 50%.  That makes it almost certain to fire!  But when the enemy fires, it is a mindless attack against one of its own allies. 
That cures the problem of the target not firing on time.  On top of that, its mana is drained as well.  This mana control skill of Zocc can be highly effective.  On top of that, Zocc's special also gives 300% damage on the target.  That is not great, but also is not bad.  In comparison, it looks powerful next to the 280% of some recent heroes, like Tyr.  

For titans, Zocc also seems interesting for a green-stack against blue titans.  His mana control feature can serve to make your titan team stay alive longer.  Also the mindless attack the titan will fire on himself can increase scores.

On defense, Zocc is weak. The problem is that his special skill requires some player skill to use properly.  You want to fire it an enemy who is about to have full mana or that will fill up with Zocc's 50% mana increase.  Empires & Puzzles defense engine however is basically stupid and does not make those types of decisions.  Because of that, use another green 5* legendary on your defense team if you have one.

Zocc's Emblem / Skill Path:

Zocc is an offensive oriented hero, so on balance, I prefer going for an attack-defense route on the Rogue class talent grid.  If you prefer to strengthen defense, I think going the defense-attack path could be acceptable for Zocc since the mana control aspect of his special skill requires him to stay alive as long as possible.

NOTE: I am on the fence about whether I should give Zocc an overall grading of "A", instead of the B+ I awarded.  What do you think?  Is Zocc an A or a B grade hero? Update: with more experience using Zocc, I have decided to downgrade him to a "B" rating, lowered down from B+. He's still fun and useful, just I thought some adjustment was warranted.

I don't think that's true. A hero can remain good, even if it does not fire its special and it still has a potential to hit using special or tile damage or normal attacks. Titans are all about tile damage. I can't wait to add Zocc to my titan team and watch the titan kill itself.

What is a Mindless Attack? How hard is it? There is nothing about mana dropping, so does the target still fire each turn? At the end of the buff, does the target fire their special?

Mindless attack is a basic blast at a random ally. It is only fired when Mana is full, it typically hits for a smallish to middling amount I would guess is around 175%, there are no other side benefits or DOT or negative effects included. It does however drain the mana of whoever attacked to zero following the attack.

Seems like Mindless Attack hits close to a normal slash attack from the hero. Does that sound about right TLK914?

Since Zocc's the August Hero of the Month, in order to get him, you basically need to get lucky and get him as a "bonus draw" in one of the summon portals. It's a 1.3% chance to get him in the portals that offer the HOTM bonus draw.

Compare Zocc to Hansel with emblems and he's not that good. With Hansel, you can usually take advantage of the 159 damage twice and Hansel is fast instead of average. Zocc also has a huge weakness vs Monks and Clerics. If there special skill blocks the mindless attack skill, the opposing hero gets the mana but not the mindless attack. Instead of blocking Mother North, you could set her off.

@Engineer, I agree. My Zocc is at 3/70 and likely will stay there a very long time. However, even at 3/70 I've tried him out with great success in some raids and Season 3 maps. But still there are better heroes for both, just saying he has some use.

Zocc and Margaret are very mean. My maxed greens are Alberich Heimdall Elkanen Bertila Telluria Francine Tarlak and Phileas. My next will be Frigg Garjammal and Lianna, or maybe Mother North or second Phileas or Alby. I do not need Zocc having 2 Alfrike. Although very slow,I used both in raids and wars and a combination of 2 Alfrike is deadly.
