Telluria - Empires and Puzzles March 2020 Hero of the Month (HOTM) Review and Grading UPDATED

Telluria was an instant hit as a premier green / nature tank for defense teams in Empires & Puzzles.  I originally ranked Telluria as one of the top 5 heroes in the game.  However, after successive nerfs, I decided to significantly reduce the ranking, and have removed Telluria from the list of the Best Heroes of Empires and Puzzles. UPDATE: I have regraded Telluria to reflect its current playability in the game.

Telluria first appeared as the Hero of the Month (HOTM) in March 2020, and received a nerf of its special skill  on May 19, 2020 after it became evident that it was a bit overpowered creating a game imbalance.  Then Telluria recevied a further "rebalance" in October 2020, after the original May rebalance (and the rebalances of Vela) failed to reduce the prevalence of Telly + Vela defenses. Even after all the nerfs, Telluria remains a very strong tank in Empires & Puzzles. 

Telluria's Stats:

  • Attack: 613
  • Defense: 832
  • Health: 1425
  • Speed: Average
  • Level: Legendary 5*
  • Class Paladin
  • Resist Minion Removal:  This hero has an innate resistance against minion removal.

 Special Skill: Force of Forest

  • Deals 130% 90% damage to all enemies.
  • Summons a Forest Familiar Minion for all allies with 13% 9% HP and 13% attack inherited from the caster.
  • All allies regenerate 306 274 HP over 2 turns.
  • All enemies get -24% mana generation for 2 turns.
  • Element Link gives all nature allies +10% critical chance for 6 turns.  This effect can't be dispelled.

Telluria's Nerf:

Telluria received "rebalance" nerfs in May and October 2020. If you read anything about Telluria's power and skill before October 2020, it now is inaccurate or outdated. Unfortunately still a lot of the assessments of Telluria and discussion on forums is based on the stats before all the rebalancing. Here is how Telluria was changed:
  • Mana generation for all enemies decreased from -34% for 3 turns to -24% for 2 turns.
  • HP inherited by Minions reduced from 18% to 13% 9%.
  • HP regenerated reduced from 411 over 3 turns to 306 274 over 2 turns.
  • Damage reduced from 130% to 90%.
With this rebalance, Telluria still is a good tank, but not the overpowering behemoth it was before.  Telluria reached a peak of 91% of the top players using it as their tank, before this nerf happened.  Over time, that amount has decreased, with the frequency of Telluria as tank declining to the range of 40%-70% of the top players. Still popular, but not as much as before.

Telluria HOTM Review:

Even after the rebalance Telluria remains a good green legendary tank, with use both on defense, and on offense in raids, tournaments and wars. Telluria's defense rating is 3050, meaning it's a serviceable meat shield comparable to other top tier meat shield tanks, like Kunchen and Guardian Owl.  

WARNING: A lot of outdated information is floating around regarding Vela's synergy with Telluria. Before August 2020, Telluria had a lot of synergy with Vela on defense due to Vela's extra damage on red/fire enemies. However that was eliminated in August 2020 due to Vela's nerf.  Normally you would want to stack reds against a green tank, however, old Vela changed that calculation. So, red stacking now definitely is the best strategy when attacking a Telluria tank.  However if you don't manage to put together 3-4 red tiles against Telluria before Vela fires, it could be game over, since your chances of winning the raid go down considerably.  (EDIT: no longer true after August 2020).
Telluria's Game Defense Rating is 3050.
Telluria's Game Offense Rating is 1220.
Telluria's special skill is of middling power after the rebalance. The -24% mana generation ailment given to enemies is strong, but lasting only 2 turns substantially reduces it's effectiveness. Still it gives a two turn slow down that can be devastating when you are against Telluria in raids. Likewise its minions act as 150 HP meat shields themselves, providing a decent defense protection.  The damage from its 90% attack is negligible, typically around 60-100.  

In raids, on the offense team, Telluria also is good good, both as a healer and via its minions. However against Titans, Telluria is terrible. I would not recommend bringing Telluria unless you lack other good greens to stack against a blue titan. The minions slow down your tile hits on the titan, a significant disadvantage.  Likewise, Telluria's low attack stat  of 613 - means its tile damage is low relative to the numerous 5* and 4* alternatives. In all, leave Telly on the bench against titans.

The next chances to pull Telluria will be in the Atlantis Rising portal for February 2021 and January 2022, if the pattern holds up. Also, I expect Telluria to first appear in the Tavern of Legends portal in March 2021, and should be available there every month after that.

Telluria Emblem / Skill Path:

As a tank, Telluria principal value is in being able to stay alive and give protection to the rest of your defense.  So I recommend the Defense-Health path on the paladin talent grid. You can take Telluria up to formidable meat shield stats on that path, with 958 defense, and 1572 Health/HP.

Overall Telluria Rating: B+
I have reduced Telluria from A+ to A after the October 2020 rebalance, and further to a B+ as newer much better tanks have come out. This is a borderline B+ now, and I may reduce Telluria further, although he remains a very good tank.  What do you think? should I raise Telluria back to A or reduce to B?

The reason for the reduction to an overall grade of B+ includes: dismal Titan rating of "D", lowered attack and defense flank grades. Telluria still is a very good as a Tank, since it remains a great meat shield, which is its primary purpose. Some say it really was the combination of Telluria + Vela that made Telluria so great, and that alone, Telluria is just a or B or B+. I think Telluria remains a goood tank for players lacking some of the other tanks, but certainly not the great tank, like it was before nerfing. What do you think?

Personally, I believe that Telluria is the best Tank in the game even after the nerf. I use Telluria in my offensive and defensive raid. Even when I loose a match Telluria is always the last Hero standing strong. (Moderator: moved from About page).

I'm on the fence about the post-nerf Telluria. Certainly I agree it still is a great tank. Telluria is a great meat shield, taking at least 4 tiles in a red-stack attack team to kill if it's fully emblemed. However, I find that the secondary effects that last just 2 turns now also are not that scary. In attacks, I often find that I dump bad tiles on to Telluria over other heroes that could do significant harm). All that said, Telluria still is the most used defense tank in the game, and is likely to remain so for a long time, if for no other reason than that once you spend all the food/iron to emblem up a hero, you don't want to lose that by removing the emblems, unless there is a big benefit to doing so. At this point you could argue whether Telluria is the best tank or just a great tank but not the best. Most people just leave the emblems on Telluria for good reason, and still use on defense. That's what I do usually.

Some people might argue that Yunan or Heimdall are better green tanks, but both still are relatively rare. Personally, I find Telluria still better than Heimdall for a defense team, but not necessarily in attacks. Yunan is a bit different, and I'm undecided on who I think is better.
